Hurricanes Katrina and Rita caused extensive damage to public utilities and continue to interrupt the delivery of public services. Throughout hurricane-impacted areas in Louisiana, it is essential to investigate what utilities and services are available at the site of your house at the beginning of the rebuilding process. Such utilities and services include electricity, gas, potable drinking water, telephone, trash collection, mail service and others. It is important to remember that much of the core infrastructure that delivered these services is still in the process of being rebuilt and you cannot make any assumptions about their availability.
In addition to the utlities, which you may be able to provide for yourself on an interim basis, you should consider if and when police protection, fire protection and medical services will be readily available in the area where you plan to build.
